Moe Clark – Festival Director

Métis spoken word artist Moe Clark fuses her unique understanding of performance narrative with traditions of circle singing and spoken word. Her poetic songs resonate with the power to heal, to celebrate spirit and to connect with authentic purpose. Apart from performance work, Moe works as a community educator to facilitate voice, writing and spoken word workshops in high schools and local communities to promote literacy and creative expression. Her performances and work span international borders and creative disciplines, including performances at the 2010 IDEA World Congress: Art for Social Change in Belem, Brazil, the 2013 & 2009 Maelström ReÉvolution Poétique Fiéstival in Brussels, Belgium, and locally in the 2012 Aboriginal Music Week, Winnipeg, MB, the 2011 Makusham APTN Series, Moncton, NB, and the 2007, 2008, 2010 Swiss Festival of Health Research. Moe is a sought after public speaker as well, with feature talks at TedXMontreal  (May 2012) and a performance for the Canadian Olympic Team at the Olympic Summer Games in London, U.K. (July 2012).

 

Moe Clark est une artiste Métis de spoken word.  Elle crée la fusion entre sa vision du  récit narratif, les traditions des cercles de chant et le spoken word. Ses chansons poétiques résonnent avec la puissance de la guérison, une célébration spirituelle qui a pour but une union sincère.  En plus des arts de la scène, Moe travaille comme éducatrice communautaire pour favoriser l’alphabétisation et l’expression créative.  Ainsi, elle anime des atelier vocaux, d’écriture et de spoken word dans les écoles secondaires et les communautés locales.  Ses performances et son travail traversent les frontières internationales et croisent d’autres disciplines artistiques : 2010 IDEA World Congress, Art for Social Change à Belem au Brésil, La ReÉvolution Poétique Fiéstival 2013 & 2009 Maelström à Bruxelles en Belgique,  et plus près d’ici, le 2012 Aboriginal Music Week, Winnipeg, Manitoba, le Makusham APTN Series de 2011, Moncton, Nouveau-Brunswick, et le Festival Canadien de Spoken Word, les éditions de  2007, 2008 et 2010.  Moe est aussi une conférencière recherchée, ayant été invitée au TedXMontreal  (Mai 2012) et ayant performé pour l’équipe olympique canadienne aux Jeux olympiques d’été à Londres, en Angleterre (juillet 2012).

 

Chris Masson – Logistics

Chris Masson combines his theatre training with his love of poetry to create a dynamic style of performance poetry that bounces itself between belligerence and humility, monologue and song, satire and sincerity. He is from Montreal, where he helps organize monthly poetry slams with the Throw Poetry Collective. In 2008, he featured on and produced their first live album, “3, 2, 1, THROW!” He is a two-time member of Montreal’s slam team, and the 2008-2009 season champion.
He premiered his first one-man show, Pathos, Punchlines & Painkillers, in Montreal this June and plans to tour it across the country. His first book, Pants with Pockets, was published by WithWords Press in 2007.  Chris is also the editor in chief of Litlive.ca, and Montreal Mirror’s noisemaker of 2009.

 

Chris Masson fusionne sa formation en théâtre et son amour pour la poésie.  Il crée un style dynamique de poésie de la scène qui est à la fois belligérente et humble, monologue et chanson et même satirique et sincère.  Il vient de Montréal, là où il s’implique dans l’organisation de soirées slam mensuelles avec le Throw Poetry Collective.  En 2008, il a fait partie de la compilation d’artistes de l’album du collectif, “3, 2, 1, THROW!, en plus d’en avoir fait la production.  Il a fait partie de l’équipe de slam de Montréal à 2 reprises, et il a été le champion de la saison 2008-2009.

When she isn’t volunteer co-ordinating, she is writing poems of her own, baking bread from scratch, or self consciously penning this biography in the third person.”

LADY SIN TRAYDA aka RYAN KAI CHENG THOM, aka CHINA ROSE is a fiery writer, performer, spoken word artist and drag-dance sensation. A little Chinese grrl with a big, lipsticked mouth, her words pack a revolutionary punch that takes the fight right to the heart of expectation, stereotyping, and all kinds of oppression. Lady Sin and her alter-egos have traveled across Canada to bring poetic performances to pages and stages from her hometown of Vancouver to her current haunts in Montreal. She has featured at such venues as the Vancouver Poetry Slam, the Throw Poetry Collective, Montreal’s Radical Queer Semaine, and the Swiss Festival of Health Research, competing as a finalist at the Verses International Poetry Festival 2012. She has performed alongside such artists as D’bi Young, Kalmunity Vibe, and the Montreal Slam Team, and was a resident at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts’s Spoken Word Residency 2013. She is currently scheduled to appear as performer at the Swiss Festival of Health Research 2013 in Montreal.

As Ryan Kai Cheng Thom, Lady Sin has also been a featured columnist for The McGill Daily, with journalistic pieces also appearing in The Fulcrum and The Charlebois Post. Their poetry has appeared in, ditch, OutWrite: A Queer Review, Intersections Journal, Kanata Journal, Convergence Journal and What If? Magazine, among others. Lady Sin and her work have been profiled by Concordia University’s The Link and CKUT Radio’s The Morning After.

With her eyes on the horizon and her feet in the glorious, star-strewn gutter of her roots, Lady Sin Trayda is always on the lookout for new vistas of performance, and new boundaries to push.

 

LADY SIN TRAYDA, aussi connue sous le nom RYAN KAI CHENG THOM, aussi connu sous le nom CHINA ROSE est un écrivan enflammé, un artiste de la scène et de spoken word, ainsi qu’une bombe de drag-danse.  Étant une petite fille chinoise avec une grande bouche colorée, ses mots sont des coups de massue révolutionnaires qui mène la lutte au coeur des attentes, des stéréotypes, et de l’oppression de toutes sortes.  Lady Sin et ses alter-egos ont voyagé à travers le Canada pour ramener ses performances de poésie des scènes et des pages de sa ville natale, Vancouver, jusqu’à sa ville du moment, Montréal. Natalia Toronchuk is a writer and a creative developer of interactive media curriculum at the Redpath museum (Canada’s oldest!). She finds ways to actively support literary communities across Canada by a variety of means including co-founding a related business (a postal book of the month club bibliophibian.ca). In addition to a variety of online projects she investigates book promotion, literary communities, novel writing and crazy bibliophilia on her tumblr (thefoxscholar.tumblr.com) and is also writing a novel which may or may not be based on some of her experiences here in Montreal.
