Tuesday October 11
HipHop Karaoke
Drake Hotel Underground, 1150 Queen St. W.
11:30pm – 1:30am
Focusing on a feel-good, no attitude vibe where the emphasis is placed on having fun, Hip-Hop Karaoke Toronto follows in the footsteps of its New York City sister and delivers a platform for Toronto’s hip-hop fans to rock the mic right. Hip-Hop Karaoke is the prime opportunity for closet MCs to finally grab the mic and bust their favourite raps live on stage with an accompanying DJ and a cheering, enthusiastic audience. Hosted by renowned MCs Abdominal and More or Les. Visit http://hhktoronto.com/ to see available songs.
Wed October 12
Haiku Head-to-Head Battle
Clinton’s, 693 Bloor St. W.
11:30pm – 2am
It’s Festival of Health Research’s first haiku competition! Poets will need to have at least 30 haikus prepared for an intense head-to-head match against fellow haikusters. Hosted by Cynthia Gould, this 5-7-5 battle will offer prizes to the top three and will be one of the most memorable late-night events of the fest. Four rounds, most likely. Sign-up at 11:20pm. Drinking encouraged.
Thurs October 12
Underground Indie Tournament
Cinecyle, 129 Spadina (through the alleyway)
11:30pm – 2 am
Come check out the first Underground Individual Slam. Talented poets from all over Canada will be battling it out for their love of spoken word (and $1000 cash, too). Audience decides who win by applause. Hosted by Testament and Ian Keteku. Full list of poets here.
Friday October 14
Poetry & Music Showcase
The Pilot, 2nd floor, 22 Cumberland St E.
11:30pm – 1:30 a.m.
After the wild Semifinals, chill out with some madly talented musicians and poets, such as Vancouver’s Brendan McLeod and C.R. Avery. You’ll hear beatboxing, songs about breakups, power chords, and much more! Come for the tunes, stay for the poetic lyrics. Hosted by Lara Bozabalian
Saturday October 15
Finals Afterparty
The Bowery, 55 Colborne St
11:30pm – 2am
It’s time to party without worrying about the morning! Dance to the tunes spun by DJ Sawtay and chat with poets you met at Festival of Health Research. We’ll be tripping the light fantastic until we get kicked out!
